Why This November is so Important

Tom Sieber, Chair, Democratic Party of Brown County
Opinion - Thursday, July 29, 2010

People at Capitol

GREEN BAY, WI - I know most of you have heard about how bad this year will be for Democrats.  The reason you are hearing this is very simple.  The Republicans are fired up to vote based on what they have been told by the likes of fanatical right wing talk hosts like Jerry Bader or seen on Fixed (Fox) News or read in the conservative Green Bay Press Gazette.  When do you remember being told about the Democratic accomplishments?  Well it starts today!

At a state level, we (the Democratic Party) have expanded BadgerCare to eliminate the waiting list for healthcare in Wisconsin.  We have enacted a law to publicly finance Supreme Court races to keep the special interest money out of our courts.  We have fought for and won money for a commuter rail line from Milwaukee to Madison with hope that it will connect to Green Bay in the near future.

On a national level, we have passed the most important healthcare reform since the late 1960’s.  We have expanded access to our colleges and universities through lower student loan rates and greater access to student loans.  We have passed protections for the LGTB community through the Matthew Shepard Act.  We have a VA clinic coming to Green Bay so our veterans don’t have to drive down to Milwaukee for care.

We have done a lot.  Was everything perfect? No!  Was everything done that needed to be done?  No!  But work continues on financial reform and campaign finance reform.

Contrast that work with the Republicans.  What would they have done?  They continue to push for no regulations on Wall St even after they got rich with our money.  They continue to push for taxpayer funded clean up of the Gulf even though BP caused the damage.  They already have a plan to “hire dozens of subpoena wielding investigators” to find out if our President is really a citizen, to attack and discredit any scientist with the morals to report the truth about global warming, to attack any Progressive group like ACORN that dares to fight for the rights of minorities.  Who knows where they will start but we can ask President Clinton where they will end.

The Republican Party is responsible for the recent Supreme Court ruling allowing foreign mega corporations the same rights as American citizens in our elections.  They are responsible for using your healthcare to leverage political gain.  They are responsible for massive tax cuts for the rich that caused our economy to plunge into the toughest economic times since the Great Depression.  They are responsible for encouraging rumors, lies and innuendo to keep their jobs.

The question that needs to be asked today through Nov. 2nd 2010 is what direction do we want our country to go in?  Do we want to continue with a functional government that is at least attempting to fix our problems or do we want a government that will be so dysfunctional it will make the George Bush presidency look good?

The answer is up to you.  Our candidates and your country need your money, your time and most importantly, your vote on Nov. 2nd.

It’s hard to believe that September is already here, and it’s even harder to believe that Washington Republicans have already spent $341,182 to launch a TV smear campaign against Julie from now until election day. We need to fight back on the ground.

I want to tell you how incredibly proud I am of the campaign we've run so far. No doubt about it – this is a tough race. But I've always had tough races and this time isn't really any different. I'm just glad I've got friends like you ready to stand up should-to-shoulder with me in this fight. Please consider a contribution of $20.00 to my reelection campaign.
